It’s been a while (a long while!) since I’ve done a product review, so I thought this month would be a good time to add a new post to this category. Today I am reviewing Icelandic skyr.
Skyr is a thick, strained yogurt, similar to Greek yogurt, except it seems to be a little milder in flavor. Because it is strained, the protein content of skyr is higher than that of standard yogurt. It can come plain/unsweetened, or flavored with things like fruit, vanilla, or coffee. As with all yogurts/cultured dairy products, skyr contains beneficial microorganisms that help build a heathy gut microbiome.
Publix supermarkets in SW Florida carry three brands of skyr: Icelandic Provisions, Siggi’s, and Painterland Sisters. Some of the products are made with skim milk (low fat) and some with whole milk (full fat). I’ve tried the first two brands and enjoyed them both. My personal favorite is Icelandic Provisions cold brew coffee. It has a wonderful creamy texture, a robust coffee flavor, and it wasn’t “too sweet”. I am looking forward to trying some of their other flavors.
For those who cannot tolerate dairy, Icelandic Provisions also makes non-dairy skyr, either oatmilk or coconut based. While I have not tried these products, I have patients who have, and they have reported back positive reviews.
So if you like Greek yogurt and are looking for something a little unique, why not try some Icelandic skyr? You might just find yourself exclaiming “ljúffengt!” (And yes, I used an online translator for that… and no I do not know how to pronounce it!)
Happy June!
