There certainly are no shortage of fads in the world of nutrition, and this article touches on five of those fads, all of which were spectacular failures.

From the article, in order:
- The low-fat craze (Olestra, anyone?)
- The blood type diet (No dairy for you, type A!!!)
- Eggs supposedly causing high cholesterol (A serious failure in understanding basic human metabolism.)
- Grapefruit and Special K having magical weight loss powers (Bibbidi bobbidi boo!)
- Weight loss = calories in vs calories out (Health and wellness is a far more complex equation.)
From the beginning of my career, I have always steered my patients away from all forms of nutrition fads. It is still a big part of my job today, even impacting how and why I practice dietetics. In fact, fad #3 was one of the earliest influences in my life, leading me to my career in nutrition. I was living in Western NY at the time, and while eggs were treated as if they were poison in the USA, in Canada all the television commercials promoted “Get Cracking!” so people would eat more eggs. I immediately noticed this discrepancy (cross the border and it changes how eggs impact your health?!?!) and it piqued my interest in nutrition.
Today I devote myself to the highest quality patient care, where the recommendations I make for each client are based on their own unique dietary needs. So be encouraged! If you’ve been misled by any food fads and would like to improve your health without all the foolishness, it’s never too late to make a positive change. I’d be more than happy to assist you in reaching your health and wellness goals without any fads or gimmicks.
Happy Autumn!!! Have a great month!
